The ‘Mareeba Gold’ is a hybrid variety pineapple, different to the generic smooth and rough leaf pineapples available in Australia. Piñata Farms grows Mareeba Gold pineapples in two Queensland locations – Mareeba and Wamuran.
History of the Mareeba Gold Pineapple
Gavin Scurr, the Managing Director of Piñata Farms was actually the first person in Australia to grow and market a hybrid variety pineapple. After a trip to Hawaii in the 1980’s, Piñata discovered a pineapple that could be grown that is low in acidity, high in sweetness and would appeal to all consumers; this was the Mareeba Gold.
Piñata started commercially growing the Mareeba Gold pineapples in 2005, and we now pride ourselves as being the market leader in fresh pineapple production in Australia.
What’s so different about a Mareeba Gold Pineapple?

It is a much sweeter Pineapple than the normal Smooth or Rough leaf pineapples that used to be available. With low acid and a soft aroma, the eating experience is amazing. Gone are the days where people took their chances on whether a pineapple would be sweet or not – there is no chance with Mareeba Gold – they are always sweet!

The Mareeba Gold pineapples are generally not completely yellow or orange in colour, sometimes; depending on weather conditions, the fruit can even appear quite ‘green’ on the outside. This is no indication of the interior ripeness of the fruit! Many people don’t know that the outside appearance of a hybrid pineapple is no indication of the inside eating quality of the fruit. Mareeba Gold’s are best eaten as soon as it is bought. The farmers know when the fruit is ready and pick it ripe and ready to eat.
